Heading into the NFC Championship Game, the Washington Commanders have a strong NBA name in their corner – and in their locker room. As the Commanders celebrated their 45-31 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday, they had a special guest at the party: Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant.

Durant, who was born and raised in D.C. and is a long-time Washington fan, supported his favorite team during the upset. He also managed a few well-placed barbs against Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

Commanders rookie cornerback Mike Sainristil, who had two crucial interceptions in the match, posted a video of Durant with the team postgame on his Instagram Story.

“Hey, what do you have to say?” Sainristil asked Durant.

“Jahmyr, put your buffs on,” Durant said – a reference to the Cartier sunglasses. The taunt drew laughter and “oohs” from the commanders’ locker room.

Earlier in the match, Gibbs, known for his touchdown celebrations, had scored the game’s first touchdown and celebrated by mimicking a pregame dance that Durant famously performed before the 2017 NBA Finals.

Durant didn’t take the honor kindly.

“I’m already sick of Jahmyr Gibbs. Go somewhere the fuck,” Durant wrote on X in response to the video.

Gibbs finished with 14 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns, but overall the team fell short of expectations. Both teams had a historic second quarter in the high-scoring game – and in the end Washington emerged victorious.

After the game, Durant left Detroit with another clue: a video of the original dance with the caption: “Have a great night, Detroit.”

The Commanders will now move on to the NFC Championship Game to face the winner of Sunday’s Los Angeles Rams-Philadelphia Eagles divisional round game. We’ll have to see if Durant makes another appearance in the locker room next weekend.
