Owen Beck gets the call

Owen Beck is a 20-year-old center who plays in the AHL. This isn’t easy. So far this season he has nine goals and 16 assists in 37 games. The Canadiens haven’t used Michael Pezzetta much. He only played 2:58 in the loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, so bringing Beck into the game makes perfect sense.

I’m not sure Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis will use Beck as center. A good center also requires a player’s versatility. He can definitely play on the wing, but there could be a different strategy. You can let him play in the middle, but you can’t let him take all the faceoffs. I’ve seen that with younger players too.

How many minutes does Beck get? This year the Canadiens have little chance of making the playoffs, so I don’t think he’ll get 15 minutes. Since he is a good two-way player, I can see him getting an average of 10 minutes per game. This is enough so that you don’t have to juggle your lines too much in any game.

Beck last played for the Canadiens in 2022/23. The Canadiens lost a 5-0 game to the Ottawa Senators. He posted a time of 9:16 in that game. He’s older, stronger and faster, so he has a chance to make a bigger impact this time.

Beck could stay awake for a while. It would be a great experience for him as he gets closer to his goal of becoming an NHL regular. I think he can be a good midfielder. I’m just not sure when he’ll be ready to make the jump permanently.
