The Washington Commanders extended a breakthrough season with a win over the Detroit Lions on Saturday to advance to their first NFC championship appearance since winning the Super Bowl following the 1991 season.
They will play the NFC title game next week without one of their best offensive players. The Commanders announced Sunday that right defenseman Sam Cosmi has a torn ACL. The injury will sideline him against the Eagles and poses a threat to his availability at the start of next season.
Cosmi suffered the injury in the second quarter against Detroit while blocking a touchdown run by Brian Robinson. Lions defensive lineman Za’Darius Smith unintentionally rolled into the back of Cosmi’s right leg, and Cosmi’s knee buckled as he fell backwards with his leg trapped.
Cosmi eventually limped off the field with the help of trainers and his night and season were over.
Veteran backup Trent Scott replaced Cosmi against the Lions and is expected to take his place at right back against the Eagles.
Cosmi is a fourth-year NFL veteran who has started with the Commanders since his rookie season in 2021. A second-round draft pick, Cosmi played his first two seasons at right tackle before moving inland in 2023. Before Saturday, he had played 100% of Washington’s offensive snaps over the last two seasons and developed into a leader and one of the best players on offense.
Sam Cosmi: “Down but never knocked out”
Cosmi addressed his injury on Instagram on Sunday after commanders announced his diagnosis.
“Down but never unconscious,” Cosmi wrote. “What a dream this season has been for me. Seeing the DMV with pride after years of waiting brought me so much joy.”
“Being able to play alongside my brothers every day and fight for something bigger than myself is something I am incredibly grateful for. It breaks my heart that the season was canceled, but I know our journey is not over yet. Win it all, boys.”
“Commanders Nation, see you next season. Trials on witness statements. #HTTC”
Scott is a seasoned veteran with 23 starts and 88 appearances in seven NFL seasons with the Chargers, Panthers, Steelers and Commanders. He is promoted to the starting lineup at the most critical time of the season.
