Anjelica Huston on Overcoming Cancer After 4 Years!
Anjelica Huston is known for her iconic roles in films like The Addams Family and The Witches, but now, the 73-year-old actress is sharing something deeply personal: her battle with cancer. For the first time, Huston opens up about her diagnosis and how it changed her perspective on life.
A Shocking Diagnosis
In an exclusive interview , Huston reveals that she was diagnosed with cancer after the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019. Describing it as a “very serious moment,” Huston explains that the diagnosis came as a shock. “It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn’t do, of places I shouldn’t go,” she says, reflecting on the life-altering experience.
While Huston has chosen to keep the specific type of cancer private, she says the diagnosis forced her to rethink how she approached life. “One of those places was taking life too seriously. So now when the opportunity arises, I laugh, and I try not to make a big deal out of things,” she adds. Huston’s newfound philosophy on life is clear: savor the small moments and embrace joy.

Cancer-Free and Grateful
After four years, Huston is now “in the clear” and cancer-free. “I’m at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me,” she says, expressing her pride in overcoming the illness. “It’s a fantastic thing. I’m very proud of myself, and I’ve been very lucky. My doctors have been wonderful.”
When Huston received the news that she was cancer-free, she celebrated in her own quiet way. “I just walked in my garden and smelled the roses and thought how clever I was,” she recalls. For Huston, it was about enjoying life and appreciating the victory in her own peaceful, introspective way.
Why She’s Speaking Out Now
After keeping her cancer battle private for six years, Huston says she now feels ready to share her story. She hopes her experience will inspire others who may be going through similar struggles. “Sometimes you feel like you don’t want to talk about it for the obvious reasons, but there’s a lot to be said for talking about it and getting it out there,” she explains. “It also gives you the idea that the world is big and you can somehow match up to it. That you’re ready for whatever happens.”

By opening up, Huston hopes to encourage others to face life’s challenges with courage and optimism. “Life is tenuous and wonderful,” she says. “It also gives you the idea that the world is big and you can somehow match up to it.”
New Role and No Plans for Retirement
While Huston has been through so much, she shows no signs of slowing down. The actress is set to star as Lady Tressilian in the upcoming three-part limited series, Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero, premiering on BritBox April 16. She describes the role as a fun challenge, especially because most of her scenes were filmed in bed. “I loved playing from bed,” she shares with a laugh. “It was very relaxing and wonderfully undemanding.”
Filming the series in the countryside of England also brought back fond memories of her childhood in Ireland. “The landscape around Bath is very much what I grew up with,” she says. “It was lovely. The local gentry were very reminiscent of the women I grew up with in the west of Ireland who were horse-loving riders, farmers, noble women.”
When asked about retirement, Huston is quick to shut down the idea. “I can’t imagine such a thing,” she says. “I think it would be too much, even for me.”
Looking Ahead
Huston’s courage in facing her cancer diagnosis and her refusal to slow down in her career are truly inspiring. With Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero set to premiere this month, and more projects on the horizon, it’s clear that Anjelica Huston has no plans of stopping anytime soon.
Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero premieres on BritBox over three nights starting April 16.
