In a surprising turn of events, the police officer who arrested pop superstar Justin Timberlake on suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI) has been named Sag Harbor’s Officer of the Year.
The Incident
Police Officer Michael Arkinson, a member of the Sag Harbor Police Department, was recognized with the prestigious award at a ceremony hosted by the Southampton Kiwanis Club on January 31, 2025. Arkinson’s fame in local circles skyrocketed after he pulled over Timberlake on June 18, 2024.
According to court documents, Timber was stopped after allegedly driving through a stop sign. Officer Arkinson noted that Timberlake exhibited signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes and poor performance on field sobriety tests. Additionally, Arkinson reported smelling alcohol on Timberlake’s breath during the traffic stop.
The Outcome
Following the arrest, Timberlake faced serious charges but eventually reached a plea deal. In September 2024, he pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI), a lesser offense than DWI. The more serious DWI charge was dropped. As part of the deal, Timberlake was fined, required to complete 25 hours of community service, and instructed to deliver a public safety announcement.
Timberlake’s Public Apology
During his announcement, Timberlake expressed regret over his actions. He publicly admitted, “This is a mistake that I’ve made, but I’m hoping whoever’s watching and listening right now can learn from this mistake.” The singer stressed the importance of not driving under the influence, advising people to consider using a cab or rideshare service if they’ve had even a single drink.
Officer Arkinson’s Recognition
Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, Officer Arkinson’s quick and professional actions during the arrest were acknowledged, earning him the title of Officer of the Year in Sag Harbor. Police Chief Rob Drake praised Arkinson for his commitment to public safety, highlighting the significant role Arkinson played in keeping the community safe.
