Why Kat Von D Is Ending Her Tattoo Career?
Kat Von D, the famous tattoo artist and reality TV star, recently shared why she has decided to retire from tattooing for good. Known for her role on TLC’s LA Ink, Von D’s career has spanned from beauty to music, and she’s had her fair share of ups and downs. But after a lawsuit that shook her to her core, she says she’s done with tattoos—at least for now.
A Career Built on Ink
Kat Von D’s career skyrocketed when she appeared on LA Ink in 2007, becoming one of the most well-known tattoo artists in the world. Her skills earned her a devoted following, and she went on to build a beauty empire with KVD Beauty, which she sold in 2020. In addition to tattoos, she’s explored other creative outlets, including music and fashion.
But even a career full of achievements couldn’t shield her from what would become a legal battle that changed her outlook on tattooing forever.

The Lawsuit That Changed Everything
In 2021, Von D found herself in a lawsuit with photographer Jeff Sedlik, who accused her of copyright infringement. Sedlik took issue with the tattoo Von D did on her friend’s arm, which was based on his famous 1989 photograph of jazz musician Miles Davis. The lawsuit was groundbreaking, as it was one of the first cases to challenge whether a tattoo artist could be held liable for copying copyrighted images.
The legal battle lasted three days, with Sedlik’s lawyer arguing that the tattoo was a direct copy of his photograph, claiming it could set a dangerous precedent for artists. However, Von D maintained that she hadn’t profited from the tattoo and wasn’t mass-producing copies of the image. After a long trial, the jury sided with Von D, clearing her of all charges in 2024.

Von D’s lawyer, Allen B. Grodsky, expressed relief after the verdict, saying, “The jury recognized that this was just ridiculous.” Despite the legal victory, Von D was left emotionally drained.
Why She’s Done with Tattooing
Following the lawsuit, Von D revealed that the experience had taken a toll on her, leaving her questioning her future in the tattoo industry. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, she confessed, “I think I don’t want to ever tattoo again, my heart has been crushed through this in different ways.” She didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to tattooing at some point, but for now, she’s not interested in picking up a needle again.
Tattoo Regret and a New Chapter
Von D’s decision to step back from tattooing isn’t entirely new. A year before the lawsuit, she had already begun removing her tattoos. In a candid Instagram post, she explained that she had grown tired of looking at them every day and wanted a fresh start. “I just got sick of those constant reminders every time I looked in the mirror,” she shared.

She underwent nearly 40 hours of tattoo removal over 17 sessions, reducing 80 percent of her tattoos to a black-out design. This move was a reflection of her desire to leave behind some of her past decisions, including tattoos she had gotten during her younger years when she was drinking. “I think I had been fed up with a lot of the tattoos I got over the years for a long time,” Von D admitted in an interview with Inked Magazine.
For Von D, seeing the tattoos “cleaned up” was incredibly satisfying. She shared how she was able to cover up the tattoos she’d gotten in her earlier years, many of which she later regretted. “I think at that time I thought I would just black out an arm, but shortly after, I knew I would end up tattooing my whole body,” she explained.

A New Focus
While Von D may have stepped away from tattooing, she’s not stepping out of the public eye. She continues to focus on her other ventures and creative projects. From her beauty line to her music career, Von D remains a prominent figure in the creative world.
Whether or not she returns to the tattoo scene remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure—her career has taken her through many phases, and she continues to evolve. While the lawsuit may have left a sour taste in her mouth, Von D is now focused on her future, embracing new opportunities and a fresh perspective on life.
Kat Von D’s decision to retire from tattooing marks a significant shift in her journey, but for fans who have followed her over the years, it’s just another chapter in the ongoing story of this boundary-pushing artist.
